At its core, Pirurvik (which means "a place to grow" in Inuktitut) nurtures early childhood development by centering Inuit culture, language, and values while incorporating complementary Montessori techniques that emphasize child-led learning and independence. Children learn through activities deeply rooted in Inuit traditions while developing the cognitive, social, and emotional skills essential for their future success.
The expansion of the program through training initiatives in collaboration with Nunavut communities is extending these benefits territory-wide. Early educators receive professional development that equips them to implement this culturally-grounded educational approach in their own communities, creating a sustainable model that centers local knowledge while providing high-quality early learning opportunities.
By honouring Inuit ways of knowing while embracing complementary educational approaches, Pirurvik Preschool represents a powerful model of Indigenous-led education that respects children's cultural identities while preparing them for success in today's world.
